French Press Brew Guide

What Is French Press Coffee?

French press coffee is a method of manually brewing coffee using a french press. This method is straightforward and produces a rich, full-bodied cup of coffee, as a result of the coffee ground being immersed in the hot water for the duration of the brew.

What You Need:

How To Brew French Press Coffee:

Step 1:

Bring your water up to about 195ºF-205ºF using your kettle.

Step 2:

Grind your coffee beans to a coarse grind level.

Step 3:

Add ground coffee to the french press.

Step 4:

Pour about half your hot water over the grounds, and stir gently, letting it bloom for 30 seconds.

Step 5:

Pour the rest of your water into the french press, and give it another stir to make sure all the grounds are saturated.

Step 6:

Place the lid on with the plunger pulled up, and let the coffee steep for 4 minutes. (steep time will vary from 3-5 minutes depending on strength preference)

Step 7:

Gently press the plunger down to separate the grounds from the brewed coffee.

Step 8:

Serve immediately! In order to prevent over-extraction and the bitter tastes that can come along with it.

A note on ratio:

For the french press brewing method we recommend a ratio of 1:15 coffee to water. Here's a basic breakdown by the common tablespoon if we consider a single cup of coffee to be 8 ounces:

  • 1 cup= 8 oz water + 2 tablespoons coffee
  • 2 cups= 16 oz water +4 tablespoons coffee
  • 3 cups= 24 oz water + 6 tablespoons coffee
  • 4 cups= 32 oz water + 8 tablespoons coffee
